Lisa Keene

On November the 30th 2013, Lisa Keene was artist of the day for cartoon Brew after the release of Frozen. There description:
'Lisa Keene could justifiably be called a Disney veteran. Her credits on Disney films date all the way back to 1985′s The Black Cauldron on which she was a background painter. On Frozen, Keene is credited as the film’s assistant art director.'

IT'S ALL JUST SO MAGICAL! She's makes the cold icy dangerous landscape look like a magical palace of happiness. Cartoon brew says: As any artist knows though, ice and snow are not uniformly white. Light refracts and reflects allowing for a wide range of possibilities. Add in blizzards and the Northern Lights, and a satisfyingly rich landscape emerges in a frosty environment.

Which is so true. And it's noticeable how blues and purples are embraced in the film. Can you believe it's been in the cinema's for almost five month's now and it's still going strong is Frozen. IT's fantastic and it would have been possible with the work of Lisa Keene, her concept art is just so fantastic and powerful to the story. I really like how she uses darker blues when isolation is required in the cave.

I feel like I should say, I don't really like frozen, it's got such a solid narrative, and is unconventionally disney, until you hear all the singing. For me there is just a bit too much singing.

Just to show Lisa Keene isn't a one trick pony, another film she work on is Enchanted, and I wanted to share these images (all taken from her website, http://www.lisakeene.com/about.html) becuase they are a completely different style, and look to be created in watercolour (or that way through a computer) but they have a different quality to them, yet remain as powerful.

What really, really inspires me is how she took this concept art to a new level by making a pop up book. I just think that's so creative and it's so visually stunning. I have fallen head over heels for Lisa Keene's work, I just want to live in the world she's created in her art, and I think that's the quality that makes it so successful.

I just want to end with Lisa Keene's own personal fine art project, described on her website as;

In addition, Lisa has quietly developed a collection of paintings celebrating and capturing the spirit and origin of the dog. Lisa brings a keen commercial eye to a heart, soul, play, heartbreak, joy, pleasure and profundity of man's best friend. Her work is inspired by visionary encounters that drive her mission to represent dogs as they are.

I think these paintings showcase some of her best skills, the way light is captured in these painting is phenomenal. They just have such a glowing energy about them. I also love the choice of colours it really makes you feel like these dogs have warm souls, which is the way she personally sees them. I also really like this one to the right which seems to be inspired by fauvist colours.
