Sound Workshop
Shot gun microphone or rifle mic, has a fluffy thing called a wind jammer to stop wind noise so on set don’t have a fluffy thing on. Need brushing as if they are matted, only use them for specific sound, normally dialogue. Might of dubbed audio especially when facing away. Getting good quality audio is all to do with proximity and being as close as possible. That makes it easier to isolate the sound.
Sounds need to be added in to emphasise movement. Emotions are triggered by sounds.
Deconstruct some sounds from workshops how would you capture those sounds?
When recording sound always turn up volume to a hundred percent. Then you won't miss any sound.
Monitoring means you can hear what the mics can hear through the headphones. If inputs turned all the way up then it means the recording devices are ultra sensitive. If you turn the input down then you can isolate the sound you want to record.
To get massive attenuation
on a microphone you can make a dish and point the microphone backwards and then you can amplify tiny sounds like an ant walking.
Quantisation - how much detail and range is in the sound
8bit old nokia phone sounds with sound without much range and sounds that can’t play much tone higher or lower than their range.
Sample frequency
MP3 or wav format. Aiff is pretty similar to wav and is high quality sound file uncompressed can be quite big. Use wav instead of MP3 to have less record time but more quality.
record formats are measured in Kilobites per second
If your matching sound with video it needs to match the same kilohertz format. The same as frame rate in video.
The faster you sample a sound (highest KHz) then when you edit it if you want to slow it down you’ll get a much better result.
Decibell range, broadcast standard is -12Db
When checking the level aim for the high be highest part is at 3/4 because otherwise you get clipping and it will distort. Sound level is essential to get a good sound.
ambient noise from the room
individual sounds, descriptive, clapping laughing, fingers clicking. Get the levels correct. You only want to hear that sound in the recording.
Free sound editing software = audacity. Make sure that sound doesn't go over -12Db. You can copy and paste selection of the track into a new track. Don't use MP3 to edit, convert to a wav because it helps the editing program to read the file.
Audition, Adobe CC, designed to work with premier, work dynamically together. ctrl+a to select everything, to change the wavelength and make the waves larger or smaller go to effects and amplify the sound. When you do this though the background noise is amplified.
Effects - Graph equaliser,
changes the frequencies separately to adjust and break down the sound. For example on dialogue if you want to make it sound like someones on the telephone you turn up the bass and down the high pitch frequencies. If levels are in the red you can turn down the master grain to level it. Adverts are always set to -10Db.
Me and Sam worked together to get various noises over lunchtime such as sweet paper rustling, chair scraping, bottle opening a lighter flicking on. I used audition to alter these sounds with various echos, phasers, pitch changers etc and put them together to make a little track. I really like how much you can alter the sound so they don't sound recognisable. I feel that this sound track sums up the sounds of every lunch time of mine in uni.
